A Common Thread: Collective Coffee Show and Art Reception

Please join the35212 and The Birmingham Art Collective  at Crestwood Coffee on April 1, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for an opening reception for Dréa Zacharenko’s latest work, A Common Thread. This illustration series explores the connections between objects and memories and will be on display at Crestwood Coffee throughout the month of April.

Inspired by many areas of art study, Dréa  combines principles of both studio art and graphic design in her dynamic mixed media pieces. She often begins work with either a birch board panel or a chipboard panel. She attempts to translate the world around her, often literally, gathering scraps of paper with simplified shapes and handwritten text and incorporating them into her work. Her work shows a constant attempt to make a better connection with her surroundings. Her sketchy, rough style forms a sort of stream-of-consciousness dialogue that involves the viewer in her pursuit to connect the dots of daily life. She studied at Louisiana Tech University, receiving a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and Studio Art 2-D. She is a native of Louisiana and has made Birmingham her home since 2007.

Local Art Opening: Bible Skillet by Jonathan Purvis

I’ve always been a fan of artist and photographer Jonathan Purvis’ work. And then his newly developed website http://www.jpurvis.com and show at Light Box Gallery really re-vamped that. I’m very excited for his upcoming show at boutwell studios called Bible Skillet.

Friday, March 26th from 5 – 8PM.

“On Friday the 26th we will be enjoying wine, beer, and light refreshments, while we admire Jonathan Purvis’ newest works on paper, here at Boutwell Recording Studios.”

Bici Collaboration with Space One Eleven

Calling all artists and generally fun folks!

Bici is working with Space One Eleven in the month of April with their student arts group, Alabama Charcoal. The students work throughout the school year learn about and make art using various techniques and mediums, and have an exhibit at Space One Eleven at the end of the classes (webiste: http://www.spaceoneeleven.org/index.php/alabama-charcoal). On April 6th, 13th, and 20th, volunteers with Bici will bringing in old bike parts and work with the students to create bike art, along with other supplies that will be provided by Space One Eleven.

We need volunteers to help critique and encourage the students with their art, and/or to create their own pieces to be displayed in the windows in May and June. If you are not interested in working with the students, we also need people who are just interested in creating bike art themselves. Space One Eleven’s studios will be available for work space if needed.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please let me know! Start thinking about what supplies you would like to have provided by Space One Eleven, which date(s) you are available for helping out at the classes, and pass on the idea to anyone you think might like to be a part of this project.

Sculptures! Painting frames! Knitting things onto bikes! Tall Bikes! Anything and everything!

Thanks,

Anna
