The End & Means: Works by April Livingston and Joe McCreary at Lite Box

At Lite Box Gallery: Opening Friday, April 8th at 6:00 p.m., The End & Means is a sculptural exhibit, fulfilling the MFA requirements at UA for graduates April Livingston and Joe McCreary. Dealing with themes of her own personal mythology, Livingston aims to inspire the viewer to “question form, assemblage, and the importance of material.” Livingston was born in Mobile, Alabama and received her undergraduate degree from University of New Orleans/University of Mobile and completed a post baccalaureate certificate in painting at S.A.C.I. while studying in Florence, Italy. McCreary’s sculpture deals with the deconstruction of everyday objects, calling into question the importance of the individual components that make up a form. Humorous in their approach, McCreary’s choice of objects is largely autobiographical. McCreary holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and has been an Artist in Residence at Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark for the last ten years. Join us in celebrating with Joe and April!

Opening “Yeon Yue : Grey American Landscape” at Beta Pictoris

Friday, January 21 · 6:00pm – 8:00pm

-Grey American Landscape by Yeon J. Yue-

My recent project “Grey American Landscape” comes out of a three months cross-country road trip, photographing American Military families, military towns, and other tourist areas, from Los Angeles to New York.
Through dealing with two opposite contexts, War and Family, in one project, I am trying to create the narrative of the world that has co-existed within reality and fiction. This new …War Documentary photographs are mosaic pieces of what American Landscape means to me.
I searched all the military related areas through the Google Map, and I realized that the areas are colored in grey color on Google Map. Grey color, between black and white, exists in our real life even on the map.

I was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, where the ideological conflict still exists. And at the age of 22, as all the South Korean males do, I joined the military service, and served alongside the U.S. Air Force as a Military Police. While I was serving, 9.11 happened, and everything seemed new to me, traumas, worries, desires, and friends and family.

This is an unseen American Landscape. Security and insecurity, reality and fiction are co-existed in one space. Glorious and disgusting, but their beautiful and heart touching stories could be found alongside my road trip. My dearest friend, Tony in Shevlin Minnesota, still puts his pistol in the vase, but never locks his front door.

Please Support: One Year One Book: MMX Open Art Venue

©Jonathan Gröger/MMX

Get the book on Kickstarter! The awesome art venue MMX where Birmingham Collective’s own Jason Burgess works at. When I went to Berlin I was able to go to this incredible venue. Please Support!

We are searching for funding to publish a book that documents the beginning of an international and transitory art project. MMX Open Art Venue started with the challenge of one year to change a dilapidated building in a commercial neighborhood in a foreign country into one of the most successful spaces for emerging and underexposed art and creativity. The space we used last year will be demolished and renovated into condos next year and the only thing that will exist is this book cataloging the whole MMX experience.
